A leading American actor born in New York City, Robert De Niro trained at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the American Workshop He is a method actor who has gone to great lengths to portray a character. For example, he gained 60 lbs. to play the title role in RAGING BULL. De Niro is the son of two painters, Virginia Admiral and Robert De Niro Sr.
Robert De Niro won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for THE GODFATHER, PART II for his 1974 portrayal of the early years of Vito Corleone. Marlon Brando also won an Oscar for his portrayal of the same character in his later years.
Robert De Niro was next nominated for an Oscar for his work in the 1976 drama, TAXI DRIVER, where he portrayed a Viet Nam veteran driving on the night shift, who gets embroiled in the life of a teenage prostitute.
In 1978, Robert De Niro was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in THE DEER HUNTER, a story about how the Viet Nam war affected the lives of veterans after their return to the U.S.
Robert De Niro won the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of the emotionally turbulent life of a boxer in RAGING BULL IN 1980.
De Niro was nominated for an Oscar twice more, for his performance in AWAKENINGS, as a neurology patient, and in CAPE FEAR, as a vengeful convicted rapist who wreaks havoc on the public defender who represented him in court.
Of his working methods, De Niro once said, "I like New York because I can still walk the streets and sit down in a bar or restaurant and observe people. If you can't properly observe, as an actor, you're finished. The impression sometimes given is that I can't leave my own home without being recognized or bothered in the street. That's just not true. I can go out, at leisure, meet people for lunch or take my kids to the park. I don't think I am glamorous enough for Hollywood."

You're in a conversation and everybody's agreeing with what you're saying -- even if you say something totally crazy. You need people who can tell you what you don't want to hear.
