After writing and appearing in Westerns and other low budget films in the 1960s, Nicholson exploded on the screen in EASY RIDER in 1969. Nicholson played along with Peter Fonda as two friends on a motorcycle odyssey from LA to New Orleans for Mardis Gras, whose misadventures on the road are the subject of the counter culture tale. Jack Nicholson was nominated for an Oscar for his role.

In the cult hit, FIVE EASY PIECES, Nicholson played an upper class, intellectual dropout who embarked on a life of slumming across America.

In 1971, Jack Nicholson played in Mike Nichol's CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, as an embittered playboy lover to Ann-Margaret.

In 1974, Jack Nicholson played a private investigator on an adultery case who stumbles across murder, in Roman Polanski's film noir CHINATOWN, with Faye Dunaway, Meg Tilley and John Huston.

Nicholson played an irreverent con in the 1975 drama, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. His character tries to lessen his sentence by pretending to be insane and meets his match in Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher, who eventually bends him to her iron will. Nicholson won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

In 1978, Jack Nicholson produced, directed and starred in GOIN' SOUTH, with Mary Steenburgen, a Western about an unlikely pair of gold miners who strike it rich.

Nicholson starred in the 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's THE SHINING, the story of a husband who loses his mind and goes berserk, when he and his family caretake an isolated resort hotel in the off season.

In the 1981 remake of THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, Nicholson plays a drifter who has an affair with a married waitress and conspires to murder her husband.

Nicholson played an ex-astronaut, next door neighbor and love interest of Shirley MacLaine in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his 1983 role.

In all, Jack Nicholson has been nominated for an Oscar twelve times. He won 3 Oscars.

Nicholson again won an Oscar for his portrayal of a neurotic, obsessive writer who woos and wins Helen Hunt in AS GOOD AS IT GETS, a 1997 drama.
