ABOUT JACK LEMMON (1925 - 2001)
American leading actor with Broadway experience, who frequently
performed in comedies. Jack Lemmon's real name was John
Uhler Lemmon III. Lemmon often played an Everyman type character with such penetrating insight into character that he won two Oscars and was nominated another 6 times.
In 1955 Jack Lemmon won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar
for his performance as Ens. Pulver, a wheeler dealer in the military in MISTER ROBERTS.
He was nominated next for his gender bending role in Billy Wilder's 1959 comedy, SOME LIKE IT HOT, with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis. Jack Lemmon played one of a pair of out-of-work musicians who pose as women in order to get jobs in an all-girl band. Lemmon begins to get comically carried away in the charade and comes to enjoy cross dressing and the attentions of a wealthy suitor.
In the 1960 drama, THE APARTMENT, he was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of a low level business man who lends the key to his apartment out to company execs, and then gets involved with a discarded lover played by Shirley MacLaine who was left in his flat.
THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, a 1962 drama, detailed the slide into alcoholism of a married couple and Lemmon was again nominated for an Oscar for his role as the husband.
In the 1973 movie SAVE THE TIGER, Jack Lemmon plays a businessman in the throes of the difficulties of mid-life as the film follows his misadventures over the course of 36 hours. Lemmon won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance.
In 1979, Jack Lemmon played with Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas in the nuclear reactor thriller, CHINA SYNDROME, as a shift supervisor at the plant. He was again nominated for his portrayal.
In 1981, Lemmon played a shallow Broadway press agent confronting his absent son and his own mortality in the movie, TRIBUTE. Jack Lemmon was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award.
Lemmon's final nomination was for his portrayal of the father of a journalist gone missing in Latin America, in the1982 mystery MISSING.
In 1971, Jack Lemmon directed the movie KOTCH, the story of the tribulations of a grandfather with his family.
