Sir Anthony Hopkins was born Philip Anthony Hopkins on December 31, 1937, in Port Talbot, West Glamorgan, Wales, UK.

He was the son of Richard Arthur and Muriel Anthony Hopkins, a poor student with no social skills, but did very well on the piano.

Hopkins received his training in the art of acting at Cardiff College of Drama, and went on to have an extensive stage career.

Anthony Hopkins was Lawrence Olivier's understudy at the Old Vic Theater.

Received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Wales on July 16, 1988.

Knighted in the 1993. Awarded Commander, Order of the British Empire in 1987.

In the 1970's, he was in many made for TV films, with a tendency toward more eccentric roles, such as in MAGIC.

Two other late '70s, early '80s films, THE LINDBERGH KIDNAPPING CASE and THE BUNKER earned him two Emmy Awards.

Notable 1970s and '80s films include: ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, THE ELEPHANT MAN, THE BOUNTY, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, THE GOOD FATHER, and THE DAWNING.

In the 1990s, Hopkins gave gripping performances in HOWARD'S END, THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, SHADOWLANDS, LEGENDS OF THE FALL.

In 2001, Hopkins gave his audience HANNIBAL, HEARTS OF ATLANTIS, and lent his voice as narrator for the film, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS.

Anthony Hopkins became a United States citizen on April 12th, 2000, because of his love and gratitude he feels toward America.

He is a volunteer teacher at the Ruskins School of Acting in Santa Monica.
