About William Windom (1923 – 2012)
William Windom was born on September 28, 1923 in New York City.

When William was in kindergarten, 5 years old, his teacher was actress Margaret Hamilton. She once threw William Windom out of her classroom for rambunctious behavior.

William Windom's great grandfather was a United States Senator who later became Secretary of the Treasury under James Garfield and Benjamin Harrison.

Windom worked on Broadway in the late 40's and 50's. He also began acting in television series such as the Hallmark Hall of Fame in 1951. He was a guest star on on many programs, including The Twilight Zone in 1959, Combat in 1962 and The Fugitive in 1963. In 1963, he starred with Inger Stevens in the comedy series, The Farmer's Daughter. In The Farmer's Daughter, he plays a congressman who falls in love with the governess he hired for his children.

William Windom made his film debut in 1962, in To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Gregory Peck, as the opposing attorney in the courtroom scenes.

William Windom also guest starred on All in the Family in 1968 and Dallas in 1978. In 1984, Windom became a regular on Murder, She Wrote, with Angela Lansbury until the show closed in 1997.

In 2004, William Windom reprised his 1966 Star Trek guest role as Commodore Matt Decker. This is the second episode of Star Trek: New Voyages.

William Windom hobby was sailing, A avid sailboat owner he won many trophies for sailing.

Commenting on his career as a gruff, blustery guy, Windom remarked, "Likable plus 45 cents gets you a cup of coffee. They want something that's effectively the same. As an actor, you make money by having them know exactly who you are and what you're gonna do and that's what they come back to see again in one form or another."
