Classically handsome, swashbuckling Tyrone Power came from a family of actors and performers. He was the third of four men in his family to carry the name Tyrone Power.  His mother and father were serious, well respected state actors and namesake great-grandfather was an Irish comedian.  His father was also a slient film star.  His four children all became actors, including his namesake, Tyrone Power, Jr.

After signing on with 20th Century Fox, he soon rose among the ranks to be a popular leading man, appearing in both contemporary films and period films alike, such as IN OLD CHICAGO [1937], the story of the Great Fire and MARIE ANTOINETTE [1938].  He also excelled in swashbuckling roles in THE MARK OF ZORRO [1940] and SON OF FURY [1942], BLOOD AND SAND, THE BLACK SWAN and THE BLACK ROSE.  In THE MARK OF ZORRO, Tyrone Power fenced to perfection with Basic Rathbone.

After the war, Tyrone Power returned to Fox in THE RAZOR'S EDGE, [1946], a complicated story of friends and lovers who meet again after a decade apart. 

Power starred in a darker role in NIGHTMARE ALLEY [1947] to critical acclaim.  The film, about the seedy life of a group of carnies, was not promoted much at the time by the studio.  Not until its re-release on DVD in 2005 has his portrayal, of the rise and fall of a carnie worker, been generally appreciated.

Tyrone Power played the accused, in WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION [1957], Billy Wilder's highly charged courtroom drama, with surprise plot twists in turns.  His fellow stars were Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton.  The production was nominated for 6 Oscars and was based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name.

The next year, during a grueling fight scene in Spain for the film, SOLOMAN AND SHEBA, Tyrone suffered a heart attack and died at a nearby hospital in Madrid.
