Topol –

Topol in Fiddler on the Roof.

About Topol (1935 – )
Chaim Topol was born on September 9, 1935, in Tel Aviv, Israel. In English, Chaim Topol's full name means 'Tree of Life'.

Topol is best known for his portrayal of Tevye, the lead in Fiddler on the Roof; the 1971 film adaptation of the musical. Prior to the film, Topol played Tevye the milkman, in a long running stage production at Her Majesty's Theater in London. Topol was on active duty with the Israeli army when he was nominated for an Oscar for Fiddler on the Roof in early 1972. He was granted leave so he could attend the ceremony in Los Angeles that year.

Later, in 1976, before being fired by the producer from the lead in the stage production of The Baker's Wife, he indulged in shenanigans on stage, such as speaking in gibberish or deliberately overacting in response to criticism from the producer.

Topol appeared in the films Galileo (1975), Flash Gordon (1980), and For Your Eyes Only (1981).

From 1983 to 1999, Topol made a career of appearing in various productions of Fiddler on the Roof, in the U.S., including a Broadway revival and in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Topol's wife, Rosalind Harris, who had played his daughter in the film, played his wife in the first U.S. touring production. Topol's daughter, Anat, played the role of Chava in a 1995 production of Fiddler on the Roof alongside her father.
