About Tommy Lee Jones (1946 – )

Tommy Lee Jones is known for his powerhouse acting, deadpan delivery and Texas drawl, often playing sarcastic, explosive police or military officers. Tommy Lee Jones won an Academy Award for his performance in The Fugitive [1993]. His other notable performances are Agent K in Men in Black and Men in Black II, and the sheriff in No Country For Old Men.

Jones attended Harvard, graduating in English, cum laude in 1969. His roommate was former Vice President Al Gore. He moved to New York, where he acted on and off Broadway. At the same time, he began getting supporting roles in television, including One Life to Live (1968) as Dr. Mark Toland from 1971-75. He also was cast in leading roles in films, such as Eyes of Laura Mars [1978] and Coalminer's Daughter [1980] in which he played Doolittle Lynn, the promoter husband of singer Loretta Lynn. He also played in television movies as well as the miniseries, Lonesome Dove [1989].

In The Fugitive, he played Deputy United States Marshal Samuel Gerard, who relentlessly pursued the unfortunate innocent Richard Kimble, played by Harrison Ford. He won an Oscar for his performance. He then quipped, "My thanks to the Academy for the very finest, greatest award that any actor can ever receive. The only thing a man can say at a time like this is – I am not really bald."

Tommy Lee Jones played Agent K, an alien investigating agent of a top secret organization, in the popular sci-fi spoof, Men in Black, which grossed a third of a billion dollars in world-wide sales. His agent partner was played by Will Smith. Jones reprised his role in the sequel, Men in Black II, as Agent K, who is dragged out of retirement to fight an evil alien posing as a hot lingerie model. The sequel made a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide.

Tommy Lee Jones is a highly paid actor, earning $10 million for No Country For Old Men, $20 million plus a percentage of the gross for Men in Black II, $10 million for U.S. MARSHALS, and $7 million for Men in Black. He owns two ranches in Texas. He is an avid pony polo player as well as a fan of the basketball team, the San Antonio Spurs.

In 2007, Tommy Lee Jones played the brooding, world weary sheriff, Ed Tom Bell, in pursuit of a Mexican drugland murderer, in the Coen Brothers hyper violent film, No Country For Old Men. The film won 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay based on published material, plus a supporting Oscar for Javier Bardem, as Anton Chigurh, the killing machine.

A dedicated, but untrained actor, Jones is also a director. On his directing preparation, he said:

"I've worked with more than 50 directors and I've paid attention since day one. That's pretty much been my education, apart from studying art history and shooting with my own cameras. I've seen 50 different sets of mistakes and 50 different ways of achieving. You just leave the bad part out."

Tommy Lee Jones directed and produced The Sunset Limited [2011], a television movie and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada [2005], which he shot on his own ranch. He also produced Man of the House [2005] and wrote and directed the teleplay, The Good Old Boys [1995].
