Sydney Greenstreet passed away on January 18, 1954 in Hollywood,
California from the effects of diabetes and nephritis.
Greenstreet made his stage debut as a murderer in a 1902 production
of SHERLOCK HOLMES.
Sydney Greenstreet spent most of the 1930s with the Lunts at
the Theatre Guild. His parts ranged from musical comedy to Shakespeare.
At age 62 and at almost 300 pounds, Sydney Greenstreet made
his film debut as Kasper Guttman in THE MALTESE FALCON.
In 1950 and 1951 Sydney Greenstreet starred as the title character
on NBC Radio's THE NEW ADVENTURES OF NERO WOLFE.
In just eight years Greenstreet made twenty-four films, all
the while beset by diabetes and Bright's disease.
