About Strother Martin (1919 – 1980)
Strother Martin, nicknamed "T-Bone", was born on March 26, 1919, in Kokomo, Indiana.
During his younger years, Martin excelled at swimming and diving. At the age of 17, he won the National Junior Springboard Diving Championship. Later, he placed third in the Adult National Springboard Diving Championships, which cost him a place on the 1948 Olympic team.
Before acting, Strother Martin worked in odd jobs. He was a swimming instructor to Marion Davies, and the children of Charles Chaplin.
Martin served his country by joining the Navy and became a swimming instructor during World War II.
Strother has frequently been cast alongside Paul Newman. The two have appeared in such movies as Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, and Slap Shot.
Martin played an ice-hearted, chain-gang boss in the movie, Cool Hand Luke. He will always be remembered for his famous line, "What we have here is failure to communicate."
In the 1973 film, SSSSSSS, Strother Martin was bitten by a snake, and underwent a hideous transformation.
On August 1, 1980, he passed away from a heart attack in Thousand Oaks, California.
