Coal Miner's Daughter (Musical • Biography)

Sissy Spacek won her Best Actress Oscar for her performance as singer Loretta Lynn, the "First Lady of Country Music."

About Sissy Spacek (1949 – )
Sissy Spacek was born in Texas. She is a cousin of actor Rip Torn.

Sissy Spacek starred in Terence Malick's 1973 true crime drama, Badlands, the story of lovers on a killing spree. In 1976, she rose to prominence in the Brian de Palma horror flick Carrie, in which she played odd girl out with telekinetic powers, tormented by her classmates, until all hell breaks loose. Spacek was nominated for an Oscar by the Academy, a highly unusual occurrence for an actor in a horror film.

In 1980, Sissy Spacek played Country Music star Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner's Daughter, with Tommy Lee Jones as her husband. Her impassioned portrayal of Loretta Lynn and her journey from Kentucky back woods gal to music industry icon won her the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Sissy Spacek also starred as a peculiar teen in Robert Altman's 3 Women (1977), a rural switchboard operator and mom in Raggedy Man (1981), the justice-seeking girlfriend of a disappeared American in Missing (1982), a gritty, persevering farmer in The River (1984) and an abused southern belle turned murderess in Crimes Of The Heart (1986).

In David Lynch's 1999 movie, The Straight Story, Spacek played the devoted but peculiar live-in daughter of an elderly man, who drives from Iowa to Wisconsin on a riding mower to patch up a decades-old rift with his brother.

In the 2001 crime drama In The Bedroom, Spacek plays the mother of an adult son who is dating a divorced woman with a murderously-jealous ex-husband

Spacek has been nominated six times for an Academy Award for Best Actress: for Carrie, Coal Miner's Daughter, Missing, The River, Crimes Of The Heart and In The Bedroom.

Commenting on the movie industry, Spacek has said, "When I started out in independent films in the early '70s, we did everything for the love of art. It wasn't about money and stardom. That was what we were reacting against. You'd die before you'd be bought."
