About Shailene Woodley (1991 – )
Shailene Woodley was born in Simi Valley, California. Her mother, Lori (née Victor), is a middle school counselor, and her father, Lonnie Woodley, is a school principal. She has a younger brother. She began modeling at the age of four. When she was 15 she was diagnosed with scoliosis, and was put in a chest-to-hips plastic brace to prevent her spine from curving further.
Woodley attended Simi Valley High School. Before landing a role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Woodley considered studying interior design at New York University.
In 2002, she appeared in small TV roles on Without a Trace and The District. In 2005, she was nominated for a Young Artist Award for her role in A Place Called Home as California Ford. She also originally played Kaitlin Cooper in The O.C. She appeared on Crossing Jordan as a young Jordan, and did other series work in such shows as Everybody Loves Raymond, My Name is Earl, CSI: NY, and Close to Home. In 2007, Woodley appeared in Cold Case as Sarah Gunden, a murder victim's younger Amish sister.
Her role in the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager as Amy Juergens, a 15-year-old who discovers she is pregnant, was a career breakthrough. The show explored the effects of her pregnancy on her family, friends and herself as well as life at Ulysses S. Grant High School in California.
She went on to further career success with The Descendants in 2011. Her performance as George Clooney's troubled teenaged daughter Alexandra King received widespread praise from critics, as well as award recognition.
Woodley played a starring role in the film adaptation of the Tim Tharp novel The Spectacular Now, as Aimee Finecky, a social outcast trying to plan for her future while falling for a boy who lives for the moment.
In 2013, Woodley won the part of protagonist Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars, the film adaptation of John Green's novel of the same name. Both she and the film received critical accolades; the film was a box-office success.
Woodley next starred as Tris Prior in the film Divergent, adapted from novelist Veronica Roth's best-selling book of the same name. The film was released in March of 2014 to mixed reviews, but Woodley's performance earned positive notices. Divergent was also a financial success, reaching the #1 spot at the box-office in its opening weekend.
Woodley will reprise her role as Tris in the second installment of the series, Insurgent, which is set for release early in 2015. She will also star with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Snowden, which started filming on February 16, 2015 and is set for a December 2015 release.

“I fell into this business by accident. It wasn't something I ever aspired to be: an actress. It just happened. It has evolved into an insane passion...a creative outlet. But nothing more. It's my hobby... one of the ways I express myself as an artist. And the day it becomes a job... a career... I will quit.”
“My biggest thing is really sisterhood more than feminism. I don't know how we as women expect men to respect us, because we don't seem to respect each other. There's so much jealousy, so much comparison and envy. It's just so silly and heartbreaking in a way.”
“I'm not one of those actors who feels like they need to get in character, to do any sort of method acting situations. For me it's all about learning my lines, showing up on time, and professionally listening to what others are saying, and then authentically and truthfully reacting off of their expressions. So, it's easy to drop roles, because I don't feel like I acquire them to begin with.”
Did You Know
Shailene's parents gave her three rules when she fell into the acting business: she had to stay the person she was, have fun and do well in school.
In order to graduate with her high school class while starring on the hit ABC Family teenage soap opera The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008), her principal sent a teacher to her house once a week to give her school work which she would do, in-between takes, on set. Then, she was able to graduate with her class on time.
