Sam Shepard was born on November 5, 1943 in Fort Sheridan,
Illinois.
Shepard's birth name is Samuel Shepard Rogers.
Playing three-act's in BURIED CHILD in 1979 Sam Shepard won
the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In the late 60s Sam Shepard
was the drummer for 2 bands LOTHAR AND THE HAND PEOPLE and
THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS.
According to a short interview in the August, 1970 issue
of Playboy... Sam wrote the 1971 play COWBOY MOUTH with girlfriend
Patti Smith and played in the very first production the role
of Slim. COWBOY MOUTH was the only time Sam Shepard has played
one of his own characters. Just before the second night's
performance, Shepard was so disturbed about the experience
of playing Slim, he abandoned the role without a word to anyone
and left town. He has always had a fear of live audiences.
In 2000 Sam Shepard was nominated for Broadway's Tony Award
as author of a Best Play nominee: in TRUE WEST.
As pilot Chuck Yeager, in THE RIGHT STUFF, Sam Shepard earned
an 1983 Oscar nomination.
Making his directing debut in 1988, Sam Shepard made an inauspicious
debut with FAR NORTH.
