This American actor, Ricahrd Hanley Jaeckel, was born in Long Beach, Long Island, in New York, on October 10th, 1926.
His family moved to Los Angeles, California during his teen years. He went to Hollywood High School.
Started as a mail boy
at 20th Century Fox studios, where he was discovered by an observant casting director.
After playing a key role in 1943's GUADALCANAL DIARY, he himself joined the US Navy,
for the duration of the war, seeing action himself. AFter he was discharged, he reentered the film industry, and was cast in a co-starring role with John Wayne, in SANDS OF IWO JIMA.
Over his 50 year career as a character actor, Richard was cast often in tough guy, manly man roles; both heroes and villains. Early career was primarily war films, starting with World War 2 epics. He no problem easing into westerns as gun fighters, and hired killers.
Richard Jaeckel earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Acotr for his performance in SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION. (1970)
Jaeckel died on June 14, 1997 in Los Angeles, California , from cancer.
