About Oliver Platt (1960 – )
Oliver Platt was born on January 12, 1960 in Windsor, Ontario. His parents were American, with his father Nicholas Platt as a career diplomat (he is an ex-ambassador to Pakistan, Zambia, and the Philippines), and his mother Sheila Maynard a social worker. Sheila Maynard is Oliver's mother, and she is the granddaughter of Cynthia Burke Roche. Cynthia was the sister of Edmund Burke Roche who was the maternal grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Born the middle child of 3 boys, the family moved back to the U.S. when he was three months old. Because of his father’s career, much of Oliver’s childhood was spent in Asia, the Middle-East, and Washington D.C. (during this time period he was enrolled in 12 different schools). The family often made trips back to Washington for the use of their Redskin season tickets.

In 1969, the family visited the Kennedy Center in Washington, and this was the genesis of Platt’s inspiration to be an actor. Watching a 20 minute monologue by Morgan Freeman as a drunk mendicant, Platt later was quoted as saying, “This guy was just so riveting… he held his audience utterly rapt. Including myself, obviously.”

At Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, Oliver Platt majored in drama. Platt was roommates with Hank Azaria and is the basis for his "Comic Book Guy" character on The Simpsons.

Graduated in 1983 Oliver Platt graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Drama, Oliver worked in theatre for three years in Boston traveling with Shakespeare and Co. before moving to New York. While working at Manhattan Punch Line Theatre, he met actor Bill Murray at a cousin’s christmas party-who later recommended Oliver to a director who in-turn cast him in MARRIED TO THE MOB (1988).

From 1988 to 1999, Platt had a role in several films such as, WORKING GIRL (1988), THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1993), A TIME TO KILL (1996), and LAKE PLACID (1999). Also during this time, in September of 1992, Oliver married Mary Campbell in Kitty Point, Maine.

In 2000, Platt started a string of television roles. He received an Emmy nomination for his performance in THE WEST WING (2001-2005) and the again in HUFF (2004-2006). Since 2006, Oliver has kept himself busy having roles in films such as PLEASE GIVE (2009), and LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (2010). In addition to these, Platt has had roles in various TV series, including QUEENS SUPREME, THE BRONX IS BURNING, NIP/TUCK, BORED TO DEATH, MODERN FAMILY, and CHICAGO MED. Oliver Platt has most recently finished the filming in SHUT IN, a psychological thriller due to be released in June, 2016.

Platt is an avid Boston Red Sox fan (although now claims he is a New York Mets fan due to his son’s allegiance).

Oliver Platt has three children from his current and only wife Mary Campbell.
