Maurice Evans was a welsh, robust, classical stage actor,
raised in London, the son of a justice of the peace. In 1926,
he started his stage career and three years later made a name
for himself in the London play, Journey's End. He wound up
performing his craft with the Old Vic Theater Company, before
coming to America, becoming a hit on the Broadway stage scene,
establishing himself as the most gifted Shakespearean actor
(1936-'46), and a master of Shavian works as well.
In the 1930s Maurice Evans became a U.S. citizen.
In film and TV, Maurice acted in various character roles,
though he received more acclaim for his TV efforts, especially
for bringing Shakespeare to the TV audience. Maurice Evans
spent his last years in England.
