This American stage and film character actress was born on June 21st, 1925 in Troy, New York. She had an active and distinguished career on the New York stage, winning two Tony Awards.

In 1959, Maureen Stapleton was the first actor/actress to receive 3 nominations in the same year: an Oscar (for Lonely Hearts), a Tony (for The Cold And The Warm) and an Emmy (for All The King's Men). In the film noir Lonely Hearts, Stapelton played Faye Doly.

In 1970, she played Inez Guerrero in the ensemble melodrama, Airport. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Academy for her portrayal.

Maureen Stapleton won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Reds, a 1981 Warren Beatty movie.

When Stapelton won that Academy award, she was asked how she liked being recognized as one of the best actresses in the world. She said it was "not nearly as exciting as it would be if I were acknowledged as one of the greatest lays in the world."

Maureen Stapelton was philosophical about beauty, quipping, "I never had that problem. People looked at me on stage and said, 'Jesus, that broad better be able to act'".

In spite of her active acting career, Stapleton eschewed air travel and elevators, preferring rail and apparently the stairs.
