La Vie en Rose (Musical Biography – PG-13)

Marion Cotillard won the Best Actress Academy Award for her lead performance in the 2007 film La Vie en Rose, the musical biography of legendary French cabaret singer Édith Piaf.

Cotillard was born in Paris on September 30, 1975, and grew up around Orléans, Loiret, in an artistically gifted family. Her father, Jean-Claude Cotillard, is an actor, teacher, former mime, and Award-winning director. Cotillard's mother, Niseema Theillaud, is an actress and drama teacher. She was chosen by director Olivier Dahan to portray the French singer Édith Piaf in the biopic La Vie en Rose before he had even met her, saying that he saw a similarity between Piaf's and Cotillard's eyes. Her performance won her widespread praise. When the film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, Cotillard received a 15-minute standing ovation. She is the first and so far only actress to win an Academy Award for a performance entirely in the French language.

In 2012, she saw wide acclaim for her portrayal of an amputee orca trainer in Rust and Bone. Two years later, she earned rave reviews for her performances in The Immigrant and Two Days, One Night, including her second Best Actress Academy Award for nomination for the latter.

In 2014, Cotillard was named "The Most Bankable French Actress of the 21st Century", with her films taking in more than 37 million in ticket sales in France from 2001 to 2014. Worldwide her films have grossed more than 3 billion dollars.

In the late ‘90s, Cotillard was in a relationship with the French actor Julien Rassam. She also had a long relationship with French actor Stéphan Guérin-Tillié from 2000 until 2005. Memorable Quotes

“The first English-language movie I saw might have been E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). I remember I was so into it, I cried so loud that the audience around me wanted to take me out of the theater.”

“I'm not somebody who opens up to people very easily. With this form of expression,I think I've found a way to speak to a lot of people and share something of myself, while still keeping my distance.”
