Lon Chaney Jr. was born on February 10, 1906 in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma. On July 12, 1973 Lon Chaney Jr. passed away
in San Clemente, California from liver failure.
Sometime Lon Chaney Jr. is credited as Creighton Chaney and
Lon Chaney, though his birth name is Creighton Tull Chaney.
American character actor whose career was influenced (and
often overshadowed) by that of his father, silent film star
Lon Chaney, Lon Chaney Jr. entered films in 1932, starring
in a lackluster serial titled THE LAST FRONTIER. In 1939 Chaney
was given the role of the simple-minded Lennie in the film
adaptation of John Steinbeck's OF MICE AND MEN. Universal,
was hoping of reviving their horror film franchise as well
as memories of their great silent star, Chaney Sr., so they
cast Chaney as the tortured Lawrence Talbot in THE WOLF MAN
(1941).
Lon Chaney, Jr., is the only person to have played all four
of the classic movie monsters: THE WOLF MAN (1941) (Larry
Talbot/Wolf Man) THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN (The Frankenstein
Monster) THE MUMMY'S TOMB (Kharis, the mummy)and the SON OF
DRACULA (Count Anthony Alucard, Dracula's son).
Pictured on one of a set of five 32¢ US commemorative postage
stamps, issued 30 September 1997, celebrating "Famous Movie
Monsters". Lon Chaney Jr. is shown as the title character
in The Wolf Man (1941). In 1971 Lon Chaney Jr. ending his
career in DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN.
