About Liev Schreiber (1967 – )
A magnetic and intense performer, Liev Schreiber (born October 4, 1967) is an American actor, director and screenwriter.
Raised on New York's Lower East Side, Liev managed to scape together enough money to earn a heady degree in semiotics from Hampshire College, and then continued on to study acting at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and at Yale University.
Before Liev began appearing both on stage and screen stateside. Liev began his gigs in Europe by landing his first professional acting job in the United Kingdom (at Scotland 's Edinburgh Festival).
Schreiber quickly established himself as a versatile character actor by tackling everything from Shakespeare to slasher flicks. Liev's big break came when he accepted the role of Cotton Weary in the Scream (1996, 1997, 2000) trilogy of horror films.
Through the success of Scream, Liev was cast in several big-budget studio pictures, including Walking and Talking (1996), The Daytrippers (1996), and Big Night (1996).
Despite his success in film, Liev is proudest of his theatrical work. He is an accomplished Shakespearean actor, and has worked with the Public Theater's New York Shakespeare Festival on critically acclaimed productions of The Tempest (1995), Macbeth and Cymbeline (1998); and in 1999, he played the title role in Hamlet.
Also in 1999, Schreiber returned to his independent film roots, starring as the cuckolded husband in Tony Goldwyn's poignant drama, A Walk on the Moon, with Dianne Lane. Schreiber portrayed Orson Wells in the HBO production of RKO 281, a film for which he earned Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. In 1999, he appeared in the Oscar-nominated The Hurricane, starring Denzel Washington.
In 2004, his career kicked into overdrive as the lead in the critically successful remake of The Manchurian Candidate.
Late in 2008, Liev Schreiber achieved more screen success portraying Jewish resistance fighter, Zus Bielski, in the film Defiance.
Liev has continued to work on a variety of projects, from small independent films to big-budget action movies. Schreiber wrote and directed the 2005 film adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything Is Illuminated.
