Due to her father's navy career the family was mobile and moved all over Virginia, then Palo Alto, CA and finally to Walnut Creek, CA where Katharine Ross grew up.
She graduated from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek and attended Diablo Valley College in the Bay area where she had her first onscreen experience in a student film. She started her career in TV westerns where she was extremely successful. After television she continued on to filmwork.
Ross was married five times and divorced four times. Her first husband was Joel Fabiani from 1960-1962. Next was John Marion from 1964-1967 and then Conrad L. Hall from 1969-1974. Her fourth husband was Gaetano Lisi from 1974 until 1979 and her fifth and current husband since 1984 until the present is Sam Elliot with whom she has one child, daughter Cleo Rose Elliott.
