Karl Malden won his Supporting Oscar for playing the would be suitor, Harold Miller, in A Streetcar Named Desire.

American stage actor whose real name was Malden Sekulovich. Karl Malden was born in Indiana of Yugoslavian ancestry. Karl Malden worked in a steel mill until the mid thirties, when fed up with working manual labor, Malden left and went to drama school and then headed for New York. He appeared in such plays as Arthur Miller's All My Sons.

In 1951, Karl Malden played the role of Mitch in Elia Kazan's film adaptation of Tennessee William's play, A Streetcar Named Desire and won a Best Supporting Oscar for his performance. Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh starred in the production.

Karl Malden was nominated again for his supporting role as Father Barry in On the Waterfront, also starring Marlon Brando, in a story of seething union politics and murder, and the ex-prize fighter caught up in it.

In 1970, Karl Malden played General Omar N. Bradley in Patton, a film about the World War II career of General Patton, played by George C. Scott.

From 1972 to 1977, Karl Malden starred, along with Michael Douglas, in the television series The Streets of San Francisco, as a police detective.

He was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1988 until 1993.

Malden continued to work on movies and television series until his death at age 97.
