About John Lithgow (1945 – )
Acclaimed American character actor, John Lithgow was born Oct 19, 1945 in New York to Sarah Price (formerly an actress), and Arthur Washington Lithgow III (who was a theatre director and producer). In his younger years, Lithgow moved quite often as his father founded and managed local theaters and Shakespeare festivals in the mid-west.
In in 1962, when John was 16, the family settled down in New Jersey because his father became head of the McCarter Theatre in Princeton. An extremely bright and gifted young man, Lithgow won a scholarship to Harvard University and it was there he made the decision to be an actor. In 1966, John got married to Jean Taynton. He graduated magnu cum laude and earned a Bachelor Degree in History and Literature. In an interview in 2015, he made known it was here, in Harvard, that he was the happiest in life he has ever been.
Following Harvard, Lithgow got a fulbright scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. While in London, John was drafted for the Vietnam War. Upon hearing this news, he induced himself into a state of “anxiety, depression and near madness”. Undoubtedly the most life-altering performance of his life, Lithgow put on a show for the physical and mental exams. He was classified as unfit to serve.
Returning from London, John had a window of time in his life that was tumultuous. His marriage ended to Ms. Taynton ended in 1980 (they had had 1 son). In 1981, John married UCLA economics professor Mary Yeager. These events among other issues led Lithgow to therapy in 1982. About this time, he started into the meat of his notable movie career.
Lithgow won an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Roberta Muldoon in THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP (1982) and for TERMS OF ENDEARMENT as well in 1983. John earned a distinguished career on the stage on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for "The Changing Room", a second nomination in 1985 for "Requiem for a Heavyweight", and a third in 1988 for "M. Butterfly".

From 1996-2001, Lithgow played Dr. Dick Solomon in 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN. It was here he was able to reconnect with his son Ian, from his previous marriage, who had a regular role in the show.
In 2005, Lithgow was given the honor of being the only actor to deliver the commencement speech at Harvard University. He also received an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree.
