Joanna Pacula was born in Poland, to a pharmacist and an engineer. Pacula graduated in 1979 from the Aleksander Zelwerozicz State Theatre Academy. She began working with the Warsaw Dramatic Theater, playing in Shakespeare productions such as Romeo and Juliet, Othello and As You Like It.

Pacula also worked in Polish films. Then in 1981, Joanna Pacula was stranded in Paris when martial law was declared in Poland. She met fellow countryman, Roman Polanski, with whom she began an affair.

When she moved to America, Polanski recommended her to Director Michael Apted, for the role of Irina Asanova, the mysterious femme fatale of GORKY PARK, with William Hurt and Lee Marvin. She also made other connections in the world of American film acting, through her friend, Polish actress Elzbieta Czyzewska.

Joanna Pacula starred in the television drama ESCAPE FROM SOBIBOR, with Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer; the story of the escape of 300 prisoners from a Nazi prison camp.

In 1988, Joanna Pacula played in the thriller, THE KISS, as twins who were separated as children. When they reconnect as adults, one twin has received a rare blood type through a kiss, which she seeks to pass on to her adult twin.

In 1993, Pacula played Doc Holiday's love interest in TOMBSTONE, with Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer and Sam Elliott.

In the 1999, Sci-Fi thriller, VIRUS, with Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland, Joanna Pacula plays a Russian scientist and last surviving member of a Russian science ship, hit by a typhoon; and something, perhaps more sinister.
