Jessica Lange was born and raised in Minnesota. She studied theater in Paris, then moved to New York where she worked as a model. Lange's first role was as the limp femme of KING KONG, a 1976 remake movie, which unfuriated critics and pidgeon-holed her as a fluff ball. She was able to send her career in a better direction, three years later when she was cast in the small but splashy role of flirtatious Death in Bob Fosse's autobiographical dance movie, ALL THAT JAZZ in 1979.
In 1981, Jessica Lang played a waitress married to a roadside cafe operator, whose affair with a seedy drifter ends in murder, in the remake of THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, with Jack Nicholson. Jessica Lange played actress Frances Farmer, in the 1982 movie, FRANCES, whose Hollywood career took a dive, along with her entire life, when she was blacklisted in the 50's. Lange was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance. Lange also met playright, director and actor Sam Shepherd on this shoot, who became her life partner.
In the same year, Lange was also nominated for a supporting Oscar for her role as an actress and confident, as well as unwitting love interest, in Sydney Pollack's cross-dressing comedy, TOOTSIE, starring Dustin Hoffman. Lange won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Jessica Lange played again with Sam Shepherd in the 1984 movie, COUNTRY, in which they played struggling farmers. She was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. The following year, Lange was again nominated for her portrayal of country western singer, Patsy Cline, in SWEET DREAMS.
In 1989, she played the lawyer daughter of a suspected Nazi war criminal in THE MUSIC BOX, who successfully defends her father, charged with heinous war crimes, only to strumble across incriminating evidence after the trial, in an old music box. Jessica Lange was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal.
Jessica Lange won her second Oscar for her role as the sexy, over ripe, mentally unbalanced wife of a nuclear science engineer in the 1950's, played by Tommy Lee Jones, in BLUE SKY.
Lange played the steadfast wife of Liam Neeson in the 1995 movie, ROB ROY. In 2005, she played an annoyed, lesbian psychologist in Jim Jarmusch's BROKEN FLOWERS, with Bill Murray as the schlumpf who goes in search of his ex-girlfriends, to find out where love went wrong.
