About James Mason (1909 – 1984)

James Neville Mason was born on May 15th, 1909, in Huddersfield, Yorksire, England, into a wealthy family. His mother was Mabel Hattersley Mason and his father was John Mason who made his money through his lucrative textile business.

James Mason went to Marlborough College. He earned a first rating in Architecture at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he got involved with theatre for a fun pasttime. He got acting experience from stock theatre companies. After graduating from Cambridge, he was cast in his debut professional stage production of THE RASCAL in the country town of Aldershot, in 1931.

During WW 2, James embarrassed his family and caused himself to be oustrasized by them because he registered as a conscientious objector. They wouldn't give him a clear pass not to serve by saying he had to serve in a non-combat way. He refused this, but got his free pass exemption anyway from the sevice because he was involved with making films.

James Mason became a leading British actor who rose to international stardom. Mason becamse a very popular favorite among the British public for his various performances of "brooding anti-heroes": British film noir HATTER'S CASTLE;(1942), THE MAN IN GREY:(1943), THE WICKED LADY;(1945), the British melodrama;(THE SEVENTH VEIL) and British film noir ODD MAN OUT;(1947).

In THE MAN IN GRAY, James Mason played a villain in 1943, and a nasty mentor to Ann Todd in THE SEVENTH VEIL in 1945. THE WICKED LADY and ODD MAN OUT in 1947, brought James Mason the attention of international audiences. Thsi led to his first Hollywood film noir, CAUGHT;(1949).

In 1952, while remodeling his home, James Mason discovered several reels of Buster Keaton's "lost" films. Mason had purchased Keaton's Hollywood mansion and immediately recognized their historical significance and was responsible for their preservation.

In the late 1970s James Mason told "Playboy Magazine" that he hated rock n' roll but loved country music.

In the original 1979 version of the TV project, SALEM'S LOT, James Mason starred with his wife Clarissa Kaye.

James had the provision added to his contracts for films that his wife would be given bit parts in his movies. They appeared together in the film, AGE OF CONSENT;(1969).

James married actress Clarissa Kaye-Mason on August 13th, 1971; a marriage that lasted until James died of a heart attack on July 27th, 1984.
