About James Cromwell (1940 – )
James Cromwell was born on January 27, 1940, in Los Angeles, California.
James Cromwell's birth name is John Oliver Cromwell and sometimes he gets credited as Jamie Cromwell. James is the son of actress Kay Johnson, and director/actor John Cromwell and step-son of actress Ruth Nelson.
James was raised in Manhattan, New York City, and went to The Hill School, Middlebury College, and Carnegie Mellon University.
James Cromwell started his thespian career on the stage, following his parents' footsteps.
He performed in a variety of theatrical fare, from Shakespeare to avant guarde stage plays.
James Cromwell has had quite a career as a character actor in film and TV projects. In 1974, James got his feet wet in television, guest starring on a 1974 episode of the TV series, THE ROCKFORD FILES, and being cast in a recurring role on three 1974 episodes of ALL IN THE FAMILY; portraying Archie Bunker's friend, Stretch Cunningham.
In 1975, James was cast as Bill Lewis for 13 episodes in the TV series, HOT L BALTIMORE.
In 1976, James made a splash as the butler in the hilarious spoof of murder mysteries, Neil Simon's film, MURDER BY DEATH.
During most of the '80s', James found a lot of work on television series and a few TV mini-series and TV movies. In the early to mid '80s', he did a lot of guest star appearances on TV shows. His first mini-series was DREAM WEST; (1986), in which he portrayed Maj. Gen. David Hunter.
James got a regular role on the (1986-87) TV series, EASY STREET, where he portrayed the character, Quentin Standard for 22 episodes. His first TV movie was ALISON'S DEMISE;(1987), where he had the starring role of Humboldt Hobson.
From 1990-1993, James could be seen on three episodes of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION; getting his foot in the door for future work in the Star Trek films and animated TV series.
Being 6' 7", James is the tallest Oscar-nominated actor of all time. In 1995, James Cromwell hit it out of the park with his performance, portraying Farmer Arthus H Hoggett in the huge hit, BABE. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. James commented on this nomination; "Andy Warhol said everybody gets their 15 minutes of fame. And if this is mine, I couldn't imagine a better 15 minutes."
In the 1996 movie STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT , James's character said to the crew, "...And you're all astronauts, on some kind of... star trek?" Cromwell is the only actor to ever utter the words "Star Trek" on STAR TREK itself. James Cromwell's character (Zefram Cochrane) is the only character to be mentioned on all five STAR TREK series.
In 1997, James was cast in a plum supporting role, as Captain Dudley Smith, in the classic, 1997 film, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL.
In 1999, he was cast as Warden Hal Moores in the classic film, THE GREEN MILE.
James played a U.S. President four times. He was President Fowler in THE SUM OF ALL FEARS; (2002), was President Newman on THE WEST WING;(1999), was Lyndon Johnson in the television movie RFK;(2002), and he was George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's 2008 film; "W".
Cromwell was one of the stars in the 2004 remake of SALEM'S LOT, based on Stephen King's novel. Along with his wife, Julie Cobb, Cromwell starred in the original 1979 version.
From 2003-2005, James Cromwell had a recurring role for 27 episodes, playing George Sibley on the TV series, SIX FEET UNDER. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
In 2012, James co-starred with Genevieve Bujold in the award-winning drama, STILL MINE. James Cromwell won a Best Actor Canadian Screen Award for his performance as Craig Morrison.
In 2013, James won a Primetime Emmy for playing Dr. Arthur Arden on ten episodes of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: ASYLUM;(2012-2013).
