About Hugh Marlowe (1911 – 1982)

Hugh Marlowe was born on January 30, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Hugh Herbert Hipple is his birth name. Sometimes Hugh Marlowe is credited as John Marlowe.

Former American stage actor, radio announcer/ radio actor who became a successful film actor.
His 1939 radio role, playing detective Ellery Queen, turned into two TV series, reprising his radio personna of Ellery Queen.

THE ADVENTURES OF ELLERY QUEEN, was what would be considered in this era as short two episode mini-series/ tv movie mode.

His second Ellery Queen project was called MYSTERY IS MY BUSINESS, and that series had 28 episodes; (1954-1955).

Performing extensively, Hugh Marlowe has been on radio, stage, television and film. Hugh got his stage career rolling, by debuting at the Pasadena Playhouse, during the 1930s'. Stage plays were his first love, and he continued being in stage productions up to the last years of his life.

In off-Broadway productions, Hugh Marlowe has been in THE DEER PARK in 1967 and ALL MY SONS in 1974.

On Broadway, eh was in many plays and musicals, such as: KISS THE BOYS GOODBYE, THE LAND IS BRIGHTS, LADY IN THE DARK, LAURA AND DUET FOR TWO HANDS.

Hugh enjoyed being in early TV series that offered shows that were stage plays for television.

Hugh made his first TV guest appearance in 1953's THE PHILCO TELEVISON PLAYHOUSE in the episode: Train to Trouble (episode # 6.4).

The series, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, has had several roles for Hugh Marlowe playing Harold Skinner, Rev. Richard Fell, Dr. Ralph Mannick, Philip Baxter Sr., and Bernard Butler.

Hugh is probably best known for his last recurring role, in the TV Series; ANOTHER WORLD. Hugh Marlowe played James 'Jim' Matthews from 1969-1982, right up to his death.

Hugh was usually cast as the secondary male lead or supporting actor in his film work.

In 1938 Hugh Marlowe made his debut role in BRILLIANT MARRIAGE as Richard Taylor.

The role of a doctor is a popular role for Hugh Marlowe. Hugh has played Doc Carozal in CASTLE OF EVIL;(1966), in 1956's EARTH VS. FLYING SAUCERS as Dr. Russell A. Marvin, and in WORLD WITHOUT END as Dr. John Borden.

Hugh is best known for his lead roles in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS. These are classic B movies, but have a huge following still among science fiction fans.

As a Reverend or a Priest, Hugh Marlowe has been in the 1960 film, ELMER GANTRY as Rev. Philip Garrison, MR. BELVEDERE RINGS THE BELL;(1951), as Rev. Watson, and BETWEEN TWO WOMEN;(1937), as the Priest.

Hugh Marlowe had several guest appearances on hit TV series, such as in PERRY MASON; playing several different characters. He was Doctor Lambert, Brander Harris, Cmdr. James Page, Guy Munford, Jarvis Baker, and Ernest Stone.

On May 2, 1982, Hugh Marlowe passed away in New York, New York from a heart attack.
He was survived by his third wife, Rosemary Torri;(1968- his death), their son, Hugh, and his two sons, Chris and Jeffrey, by his second wife, film actress K.T. Stevens;(1946-1967).
