About Hugh Grant (1960 – )

Hugh John Mungo Grant was born on September 9, 1960, in Hammersmith, London, England, the second son of parents, Captain James Murray Grant, a veteran of an eight year stint in the Seaforth Highlanders and Finvola Susan Grant, a school teacher for the state schools in west London.

Hugh and his brother were raised in Chiswick, west London, next to the grand mansions in the Arlington Park area, on Sutton Lane. They attended local, private schols in and around London. Hugh got an athletic scholarship to the independent, exclusive, west London high school, Latymer Upper School, the best school for studying the arts and sports.

Graduated from Oxford University with a degree in English.

Hugh's brother, James, became a successful banker, hired as the managing director, in charge of JP Mogan's Chase in New York, as the Head of Healthcare, Consumer, & Retail Investment Banking Coverage.

After his military service, Hugh's father ran his carpet firm, and enjoyed both golf and painting.

Hugh's ancestors were a strange mix of service-orientated military folks, movers and shakers, and aristicrats. Both of Hugh's parents were from military families. Hugh's paternal grandfather was Major James Murray Grant, a decorated WW 11 hero. Hugh spent his summers in Scotland, hunting with Grandpa James.

Sometimes Hugh Grant is credited as Hughie Grant. By performing in a British comedy sketch group, The Jockeys of Norfolk is how Hugh Grant got his start.

Just when Hugh was thinking of giving up acting, fate intervened. The role that made Hugh Grant a star overnight was that of the character, Charles in the 1994 mega- international hit, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL. For his performance, he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor, and a BAFTA Award as well.

Grants production company is called Simian Films – so named by Elizabeth Hurley because she has said that he resembles an ape or a monkey.

One film that he would love to make is to tell the story of his grandfather's real life escape from a prisoner of war camp during WWII.

Though Hugh has won much notice by his performances in film, he doesn't enjoy the the process, perhaps liking stage work better. "I think film acting's just a miserable experience. It's so long and so boring and so difficult to get right so that what you need above all is incredible willpower and strength of mind."

For his performance as William Thacker in the 1999 filM, NOTTING HILL, Hugh was nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe Award. for this same performance, Hugh won a Best Actor Golden Slate Csapnivalo Award and the Best British Actor Empire Award.

This statement probably explains why he has had issues with a long commitment or marriage. "Women are frightening. If you get to 41 as a man, you're quite battle-scarred."
