About Howard Hesseman (1940 – )

Howard Hesseman was born on February 27th, 1940, in Lebanon, Oregon. He was the son of George Henry and Edna Hessman, though he was raised by his mother and his step-father, who worked as a police officer.

Howard went to the University of Oregon, but quit to go into acting. In San Francisco, Howard was a founding member of the improvisational comedy troupe, THE COMMITTEE, with fellow actor, David Stiers. Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner were also members. Howard took the stage name, Ron Sturdy. He was active in this troupe, from 1965 to 1975.

A versatile character actor for many years, Howard Hesseman has been on different television shows since the 1960s, and took small parts in THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, DRAGNET 1967(1967), SOAP;(1977), SANFORD AND SON;(1972) and ONE DAY AT A TIME;(1975).

The role that brought Howard Hesseman to prominence was his performance as Howard Johnson in the 1971 cult classic, BILLY JACK.

Other films that he had a small film parts include:THE SUNSHINE BOYS;(1975), TUNNEL VISION;(1976), SILENT MOVIE;(1976), and THE BIG BUS;(1976).

Perhaps Hesseman will be forever remembered from the classic series, WKRP IN CINCINNATI ;(1978), as anti-disco DJ Dr. Johnny Fever. Before he became an actor, Howard Hesseman was a real radio D.J., so the WKRP IN CINCINNATI (1978) role fit him perfectly.

Hessman continued to get small part character roles in films during the 1980s'. This run of hilarious films includes: DR. DETROIT;(1983), THIS IS SPINAL TAP;(1984) and CLUE;(1985).
In 1986, Hessman was cast as a teacher, Charlie Moore, in the sit-com, HEAD OF THE CLASS; (1986-1990).

In recent years Howard Hesseman has concentrated mostly on television, where he usua;;y has small guest roles, in shows like THAT '70S SHOW (1998), TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL; (1994), THE PRACTICE; (1997), and CROSSING JORDAN; (2001).

Howard Hessman is married to actress Caroline Ducrocq, since July 22nd, 1989. He has no children, but has a happy marriage, the third time around.
