About Herbert Edelman (1933 – 1996)

Herbert Edelman was born on November 5, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York.
Herbert Edelman is sometimes credited as Herb Edelman.

His first career choice was to become a veterinarian, and he pursued this dream at Cornell University. Herbert left during his first year. He went into the Army, and served by being an announcer for Armed Forces Radio. After the Army, Herbert tried college again, and went briefly to Brooklyn College, majoring in theatre.

While working as a taxi cab driver, to feed his acting habit, one of Herbert'ss fares happened to be director Mike Nichols, who offered him a supporting actor part, as the telephone installer, in Neil Simon's BAREFOOT IN THE PARK on Broadway, in 1963. The play was a huge hit; opening on October 23rd, 1963 and closed on June 25th, 1967, after 1,530 performances.

In between his performances in this play, Herbert guest-starred on TV series like THE REPORTER;(1964), THE DOCTORS AND NURSES;(1965), HONEY WEST;(1965), HEY, LANDLORD;(1966), THAT GIRL;(1967), and, THE GIRL FROM UNCLE;(1967).

His performance in BAREFOOT IN THE PARK on Broadway, turned out to be Herbert's break-through role. In 1967, he was cast in the movie version of BAREFOOT IN THE PARK;(1967), reprising his Broadway role. In Neil Simon's 1968 film, THE ODD COUPLE, Herbert was cast as Murray. In Simon's 1978 film, CALIFORNIA SUITE, Herbert was cast in another supporting actor role, Harry Michaels.

Over the years Herbert Edelman has been on TV with several guest appearances: on LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE ;(1972), BEWITCHED; (1971), POLICE STORY; (1976), THE GOOD GUYS; (1968) and FANTASY ISLAND; (1981-1982).

Herbert Edelman is sometimes credited as Herb Edelman.

Herbert was honored with two Primetime Emmy nominations for his guest performances as the character, Stan, on the TV series, THE GOLDEN GIRLS, in 1987 and 1988.

Edelman was equally adept at comedies and dramas. Playing Lt. Artie Gelber on MURDER SHE WROTE, Herbert had several guest appearances playing the same role from 1995 - 1992.

On July 21, 1996, Herbert passed away in Woodland Hills, California from emphysema. He is survived by his long-time girl friend, Christina Pickles, and his two children; Briana and Jade(by his domestic partner, Merrilyn Crosgrove;(1971-1984).
