About Henry Silva (1928 – )

Henry Silva was born on September 15, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. His father was Italian, and his mother was from Northern Spain. His father left when Silva was just 3 months old, never to be seen again.

His mother inspired him to become an actor. She would entertain him by telling stories and imitating the people whom she saw. At the age of 13, Henry dropped out of school to take acting lessons, and supported himself as a dishwasher. He worked his way up to waiter, eventually in 1955.

!955 was also the year that Henry decided that he was ready to audiion for the Actor's Studio. Out of more than 2500 applicants, Henry was one of five auditioners chosen. As a class project A HATFUL OF RAIN was their stage production. It was so well-received that it eased on out the door to Broadway itself, with Ben Gazzara, Shelley Winters, and Henry Silva playing key roles.

Henry was discovered in this play, and was beckoned out to Hollywood, where he found a lot of work in films. Henry Silva had a face and a manner to match, that inspired being cast as a hitman, gangster, villain or dark hero.

Even Alfred Hitchcock thought so, casting him as a hit man in his TV series, the 1956 episode, THE BETTER BARGAIN. So Henry made a great career playing tough guys of all kinds, some of which you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley.

Henry was quickly type-cast, and he talked about that in an interview. "I got typecast as a heavy. There's no reason in the world for me to be a heavy, none. People love to put handles on you. They're not thinking about you, they're thinking about themselves. You have to be creative or else; if you're creative, then they'll go with you, but they want the easy way out."

In 1952, Henry Silva had a uncredited role in VIVA ZAPATA! playing Peón who challenges 'president' Zapata.

It was not until 1956 that Henry Silva would have his first credited role in the film CROWDED PARADISE.

It was a spaghetti western that would bring Henry Silva to stardom, the hit was THE HILLS RUN RED.

A great role for Henry Silva was when he co-starred with Frank Sinatra in the 1977 film, CONTRACT ON CHERRY STREET.

Playing Kane, Henry Silva was on the hit 1979 TV Series, BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY.

It was a spaghetti western that would bring Henry Silva to stardom, the hit 1966 film, THE HILLS RUN RED.

Nearly 40 years later Henry Silva was in the original version of OCEAN'S ELEVEN in 1960, playing Roger Corneal, then in 2001 Silva was a Boxing Spectator in OCEAN'S ELEVEN.

Having a recurring role, Henry Silva was a TV Guest star in THE OUTER LIMITS playing General Juan Mercurio and Chino Rivera.

In 1998 , Henry Silva brought to life the animated voice of Bane in the TV Series BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS. He also played the same role on the animated series SUPERMAN, in the episode: Knight Time.

Henry was married three times. His third marriage was to actress Ruth Earl, and it lasted the longest, from 1966-1987. They had two children: Michael and Scott. Henry was able to raise and be involved with his sons, unlike his own father.

I'm a very lucky guy in certain aspects. I've enjoyed my life. It's not the end of it -- I'm still enjoying it.
