About Helen Slater (1963 – )

Helen Slater was born in New York City, into a Jewish family, with roots in Eastern Europe.
Her mother, Alice Joan was lawyer, active in the peace movement, and her father, Gerald Slater, was a television executive. Helen has a brother, David, who is now a lawyer in New York City.

Helen Slater has made great use of her gifts. She is a stage, television and film actress, a singer and songwriter; (4 CDs) and written an original musical, THE UGLY DUCKLING, called a creative gathering and can be used in a workshop form.

Helen grew up in Massapequa, Long Island, New York. Her parents got divorced when she was thirteen years old. Helen started her high school education at Great Neck South High School, but transferred to the High School of the Performing Arts in New York City, where she graduated in 1982.

In 1986, Helen Slater co-founded the New York Theater group, Naked Angels, whose glamorous parties and provocative, socially relevant productions were popular in town. The company, defunct from 1995 to 2005, was revived and is currently producing Off-Broadway plays.

Helen Slater is married to film editor Robert Watzke, since 1989, with whom she had a daughter, Hannah Nika, on August 28th, 1995.

Helen began working in television in 1990, along with her work in movies.

Her breakout role came with title role in the movie, SUPERGIRL; [1984] in which she played opposite villain Faye Dunaway.

In 1985, Helen Slater and Christian Slater were cast as brother and sister, in the film, THE LEGEND OF BILLY JEAN, leading many to think that they were related, truly brother and sister, which they are not; just have the same last name.

In 1986, Helen Slater portrayed a disgruntled clothing designer;(Sandy Kessler), in the comedy film, RUTHLESS PEOPLE; with Judge Reinhold;(Ken Kessler), Bette Midler;(Barabara Stone), Bill Pullman;(Earl Mott), Anita Morris;(Carol Dodsworth), and Danny DeVito;(Sam Stone).

Slater played a Harvard grad business exec, Christy Wills, sand love interest in the 1987 THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS, opposite Michael J. Fox, in a comedy of mistaken identity.

In the 1991 movie, CITY SLICKERS, a tale of three men; played by Daniel Stern, Billy Crystal, and Bruno Kirby, working out their collective mid-life crisis on a cowboy ranch/cattle drive vacation. Slater played Bonnie Rayburn, a participant in the cattle drive, who winds up being the love interest of one of the characters, Daniel Stern .
