About Helena Bonham Carter (1966 – )

The great-granddaughter of P.M. Lord Herbert Asquith and the grandniece of director Anthony Asquith, Helena Bonham Carter was born to a banker father and a Spanish psychotherapist mother on May 26, 1966, in London. She is the youngest of their three children.

After attending South Hampstead High School and Westminster School in London, Helena devoted herself to an acting career. Her her first acting job, in a commercial at age 16 was followed with a role in the made-for-TV movie, A PATTERN OF ROSES;(1983), which subsequently led to her being cast in the Merchant Ivory films, A ROOMWITH A VIEW;(1985) and LADY JANE;(1986), which was her first leading role.

carter-image Helena's role as the 16th century teen queen, inthe film, LADY JANE made enough of an impression  to catch the attention of director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant, who cast her as the protagonist of their 1986 adaptation of E.M. Forster's, A ROOM WITH A VIEW. The film proved a great critical success, winning eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Helena continued to surprise audiences with magnificent performances in a variety of roles; from her more traditional corset-clad character in THE WINGS OF THE DOVE; (1997) and Shakespearian damsels, to the dark and neurotic anti-heroines of FIGHT CLUB;(1999) and many of Tim Burton's films.

Helena expanded her acting range with her more recent films, which include: Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Tim Burton's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, CORPSE BRIDE, BIG FISH, SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, AND HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE.

Bonham Carter has been nominated twice for a Best Actress Academy Award, for her performances in the 1997 film THE WINGS OF A DOVE, and in the 2010 film THE KING'S SPEECH.

Bonham Carter has been nominated seven times for Golden Globes, three times for Primetime Emmys, and five times for BAFTA Awards for her performances in films, TV Mini-series and TV Movies. Carter won a Best Supporting Actress BAFTA AWARD for her wonderful performance in THE KING"S SPEECH.

In early 2009, Bonham Carter was named one of The Times Newspaper's top 10 British Actresses of all-time.

Up until recently, Bonham Carter has had a relationship with Tim Burton, living in London. The couple have two children. Though they had a friendly separation, they both are raising their children together.
