Harry Morgan was born in Detroit, Michigan. While preparing for a career in law at the University of Chicago in 1935, he began acting and jumped ship.
Two years later, he was acting in New York City alongside the likes of Lee J. Cobb, Elia Kazan and Karl Malden on Broadway.
He turned to movie acting in LA. In 1952, Henry Morgan was a cast member of HIGH NOON, with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly,, playing the character Sam Fuller. Morgan performed significant roles in many movies, including HOW THE WEST WAS WON(1962), in which he played Ulysses S. Grant to John Wayne's William Tecumseh Sherman, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER! (1971), and THE SHOOTIST, (1976).
Morgan became a household favorite as Detective Bill Gannon on the popular crime TV show, Dragnet (1967 - 1970).
Morgan is known for his portrayal of the long suffering, down to earth Colonel Sherman T. Potter in the television series M*A*S*H* from 1975-1983. When Harry's character, Colonel Sherman Potter, joined M*A*S*H,
he put a picture of his wife, Mildred, in the upper left
hand corner of his desk, where it remained for the rest of

Henry Morgan was a popular actor on a variety of other television series, including DECEMBER BRIDE (1954-59),
THE RICHARD BOONE SHOW (1963-64), KENTUCKY JONES (1964-65),
DRAGNET (1967-70), THE D.A. (1971-72), and HEC RAMSEY (1972-74). He was also in also starred in HEC RAMSEY from 1972-1974.
Referring to his early years in Hollywood, Morgan commented, "I didn't have enough money to go back east, so I stayed around, finding jobs mainly out of friendships. I played a lot of sheriffs in those years."
