About Harry Dean Stanton (1926 – )

Harry Dean Stanton was born on July 14, 1926 in West Irvine, Kentucky, into a family that raised tobacco. His father, Sheridan HArry Stanton, also was a barber, and his mother Ersel, was a cook and hair dresser. Harry had two younger brothers, and a younger half-brother. His parents dovprced when Harry was in high school.

Harry grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1944. He was promptly drafted into the Navy, serving as a cook upon Landing Ship Tank;(LST) and was in the Battle of Okinawa.

Harry went to he University of Kentucky in Lexington, participated in the theatre program, and studied journalism and radio arts. He loved both writing and acting, but he decided to go for acting. Harry went to California, and studied at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Stanton has had a long, superb acting career, being in over 100 films, and 50 TV episodes, adding his special personna to every film and TV show where he performed, no matter who the character was in importance.

In an interview, Harry shared his acting style and philosophy. "Early on the whole point of acting was mostly getting a job and then the experience of doing it. But when I did RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND;(1966) with Jack Nicholson, I discovered there was more to it than that. It was a key film for me because of that. Jack told me not to do anything, just let the wardrobe do the acting."

"It was a great revelation that became an acting principle. To be rather than to do. You have to behave on screen as much as you do in real life. You don't kill anyone in life, but you understand the anger that may bring it about."

Prior to 1971, Stanton was credited in films and on TV as Dean Stanton so as to avoid any confusion with character actor Harry Stanton, both of whom would appear together in a 1969 episode of PETTICOAT JUNCTION.

In 1957, Harry Dean Stanton's first on-screen role was in TOMAHAWK TRAIL; a film that didn't exactly set records. Although TOMAHAWK TRAIL was a B movie, Harry's performance got him noticed by casting directors, and HArry began appearing regularly in minor roles, such as cowboys and soldiers through the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Apart from his film performances, Stanton is also an accomplished musician. The Harry Dean Stanton Band, with their unique spin on mariachi music have been playing together for well over a decade. Stanton became a cult figure of cinema and music and when Deborah Harry sang the lyric I want to dance with Harry Dean... in her 1990s hit I Want That Man, she was talking about him.

In 2011, the Lexington Film League decided to honor Harry STanton with a film festival, showing three of his most loved films: PARIS, TEXAS, REPO MAN AND COOL HAND LUKE, along with a PBS documentary, HARRY DEAN STANTON;CROSSING MULHOLLAND.

This memorable event was held at the historic Kentucky Theater in Lexington. This festival continues to be held each year.
