About Harold Gould (1923 – 2010)

Harold Vernon Gould was born on December 10, 1923 in Schenectady, New York into a jewish family. Harold Vernon Goldstein is Gould's birth name.

On the TV series LOVE AMERICAN STYLE, Gould originated the role of Howard Cunningham in a segment called 'Love and the Happy Days' in 1972. When HAPPY DAYS became an actual series with Ron Howard and Henry Winkler, Gould was replaced in the dad role by Tom Bosley. Gould was in Europe doing a play, by the time the offer came his way.Gould honored his commitment to the stage production, and declined the role. He also didn't want to shave his beard for the part.

A Professor in speech and drama at Cornell University, Harold Gould decided to practice what he preached and started pursuing some off-Broadway work in the 1950's. In the 1960's he became a full-time professional actor.

He enjoyed a prolific thespian career, acting on television in series and ty movies, and films as well. Harold Gould has had over 140 TV guest appearances on many different series', TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, DALLAS, L.A. LAW, and ST. ELSEWHERE, as well as being a regular on quite a few TV series' throughout his career.

He was nominated for five Supportive Actor Primetime Emmys: 1986 TV Movie, MRS DELAFIELD WANTS TO MARRY. In 1980, nominations came for three different TV movies;(THE SCARLETT O'HARA WAR, THE SILENT LOVERS, & THIS YEAR'S BLONDE). In 1978, it was for a RHODA Episode; HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. In 1973, he was nominated for a POLICE STORY episode; FATHER AND SONS.

Gould also originated the role of Marlo Thomas' father in the first pilot of THAT GIRL. However, Lew Parker got the role in the series.

Gould won an OBIE AWARD in 1969, for his stage performance in "The Increased Difficulty of Concentration." Gould reprised his character in the PBS version of this play in 1988.

Gould married the love of his life, Lea Vernon in 1950, and they had three children: Joshua, , Lowell, and Deborah. Their marriage lasted a life-time, until Gould passed away.

Gould died on September 11th, 2010, in Woodland Hills. Los Angeles, CAlifornia from prostrate cancer. He was 86 years old.
