About Halle Berry (1966 – )
Halle Berry was born on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, the younger daughter of Jerome and Judith Berry, who divorced when Halle was four. Her mother, a psychiatric nurse, raised her, and her sister. Halle and her sister have had no contact with their father since he left. This abandonment left a whole in her heart; always wondering what ever became of him.
Halle's beauty was her first gift that got recognition. Halle won the 1985 Miss Teen USA at 17, representing the state of Ohio. The following year, she was the first runner up in the 1986 Miss USA Pageant.
Halle moved on to become a model, until 1989 when she landed a part on the short-lived TV series, Living Dolls. This show was a spinn-off of the popular TV series, WHO'S THE BOSS? It was during filming of this show that Halle collapsed on the set and later was diagnosed as having Type 2 Diabetes.
Her first regular role in a TV series happened in 1991, when she was cast as Debbie Porter, in the soap opera serial, KNOTS LANDING.
Berry's first breakthrough film role was her portrayal of a drug addict in Spike Lee's film, Jungle Fever. Throughout the nineties, Halle portrayed a variety of characters. Halle likes to live her roles and stays in character during the duration of the filming, on and off the set.
Halle Berry won a Golden Globe award for Best Actress, for her portrayal of the title role in the made for cable 1999 movie, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge; a mini-series about the first Afro-American to be nominated for an Academy award. For this same performance, she won a Primetime Emmy as well in 2000.
Halle Berry also was nominated for Golden Globes for her performances in the following movies: FRANKIE & ALICE;(2010), THE EYES WERE WATCHING GOD;(2005), and MONSTER'S BALL;(1999).
Besides being a diabetic, Halle also suffered a partial hearing loss in one ear after an altercation with a boyfriend, in the early nineties.
