About George Takei (1935 – )

George Takei was born on April 20th, 1977, in Los Angeles, California, to a real estate broker and his wife. During World War II, the family was detained in an U.S. several government internment camps. After the war was over, the family was released.

George Takei then went to high school in LA. He studied architecture at UC Berkeley, until he developed an interest in acting and transferred to UCLA's theater program. He appeared in television in PLAYHOUSE 90 (1956) as an embittered soldier in postwar Japan and did roles in HAWAIIAN EYE (1959) even before he graduated in 1960. George then studied for the summer at the Shakespeare Institute at Stratford-Upon-Avon in the U.K.

Takei received his masters from UCLA in 1964. In 1966 he was cast in the second STAR TREK pilot, as Mr. Sulu and played the character on the television show until its demise in 1969. He then played Sulu in every STAR TREK movie: STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979), STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982), STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK (1984), STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME (1986), STAR TREK V; THE FINAL FRONTIER (1989), STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (1991).

George Takei has played guest roles on many television series, including KUNG FU (1972), HAWAII FIVE-0 (1975), GENERAL HOSPITAL (1985), MURDER SHE WROTE (1987), MIAMI VICE (1987), GROSSE POINTE (2000), and, as a voice actor, THE SIMPSONS (1991-2001). George Takei has also been in many films. He continues to appear in movies and television, and has been in over 150 projects.

George Takei married in 2008, being part of the first same-sex couple to apply for a license in West Hollywood. Takei is an outspoken advocate for gay rights and has made a number of biting PSAs on the subject.

George Takei wrote on his website: "I love things British. My car is British. My wardrobe, to a good extent, is British. I even love the food in London – I think British food has shaken its prevailing perception as indigestible and become quite wonderful. I try to get to Britain for holidays as often as I can. I love things British."
