35. Ten years later they divorced.
In 1988 Gary Merrill published his autobiography: "Bette,
Rita, And The Rest Of My Life".
Merrill left film to enter politics in 1968, running unsuccessfully
for a seat in Maine's legislature. Gary continued to do stage
work and made a lucrative living doing voice-overs for radio
and television commercials.
