About Frank Oz (1944 – )

Frank OZ was born on May 25, 1944 in Hereford, England. His birth name was Frank Richard Oznowicz. Both of his parents, Frances (née Ghevaert) and Isidore Oznowicz, were puppeteers. During World War 2, they were part of the Polish underground. After the war, they immigrated to England. In 1949, the Oznowicz family moved to Oakland, California, when Frank was five years old. They all became United States citizens.

FRANK OZ is an English American, well-known puppeteer, actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter.

Frank began staging puppet shows when he was twelve. During his teen years, He became an apprentice puppeteer at Children's Fairyland for the Vagabond Puppets, that was a production of the Oakland Recreation Department. His mentor was Lettie Connell.

Seven years later at 19 years, Frank Oz joined Jim Henson's staff of puppeteers and gradually became Henson's closest collaborator, on the Emmy award-winning children's TV shows, SESAME STREET and THE MUPPET SHOW. Frank Oz also gave voice to such well loved Muppet characters as Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Sesame Street characters Bert, Kermit, the Cookie Monster and Grover.

Frank Oz's most notable performance was as the voice of Jedi master, Yoda, in videos, and Disneyland rides and of course all the Star Wars films; such as THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and in RETURN OF THE JEDI, to name just a few.

Frank Oz received 4 Primetime Emmy Nominations and one win for his work done on the Muppet Show; awards he shared with producer Jim Henson, and others involved with the show. Frank went on and provided the voices of the muppets for all their movies and TV specials as well.

Oz also is an actor, though mostly known for his voices. Oz has worked with Steve Martin on THE MUPPET MOVIE, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, HOUSESITTERS, and BOWFINGER). Frank Oz has also appeared in many of Director John Landis's films, like THE BLUES BROTHERS.

Frank Oz has directed 14 films, including THE DARK CRYSTAL, THE MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, WHAT ABOUT BOB?, BOWFINGER, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1986), THE INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD, and THE STEPFORD WIVES.
