Frances Sternhagen is a character actress, who was raised in Washington D.C., the daughter of a U.S. tax court judge. Sternhagen graduated from Vassar College. She was teaching performing arts to kids, when she turned to the acting on the stage, herself.
Sternhagen was nominated 5 times for a Tony Award for her work on Broadway, in such shows as "Equus", "On Golden Pond", "Angel" and "You Can't Take it With You". Sternhagen won a Tony for her work in "The Good Doctor".
Frances Sternhagen debuted in movies in UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE in 1967. Sternhagen played Cliff's mom on CHEERS. In SEX AND THE CITY, Sternhagen played Bunny MacDougal, the upper crust mom of Troy MacDougal. The antics of Sternhagan's character as a nasty, manipulative, Park Avenue matron, added a third dimension to the tragi-comedy of Charlotte's marriage to Troy.
She created memorable roles in MISERY, RAISING CAIN and recently in JULIE AND JULIA.
Frances Sternhagen is the widowed mother of 6 children. "If I didn't have my family I would be so lonely. The theater and acting are so artificial that I would go crazy if that was all I had."
