About Eric Idle (1943 – )
Eric Idle was born on August 29, 1943, in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, England. He was the son of Eric Idle Sr. and Norah Barron Sanderson. His father, who served in the Royal Air Force and survived the war, tragically died in a hitch-hiking car accident on Christmas Eve when Eric was two years old.
Eric Idle was sent to the Royal Wolverhampton School as a boarder, at the age of seven for kids who were orphans or came from a single mother family. It was a charitable organization that was dedicated to the education and maintenance of children who had lost one or both parents.
Eric Idle saw it as a scarring experience, but one that had one hidden blessing. "I still have nightmares that I'm back at the Ophney. It was a physically abusive, bullying, harsh environment for a kid to grow up in, a boarding school where nobody had any fathers. The terms were interminable, fourteen weeks with no emotional support."
The silver lining to this school experience was that it helped Eric to develop his comedic talent. In interviews, Eric explained, "I got used to dealing with groups of boys and getting on with life in unpleasant circumstances and being smart and funny and subversive at the expense of authority. Perfect training for Python. Comedians are not normal people. It is not a normal thing to do. You don't become a comedian without some early traumatizing experience, so comedy is also a coping mechanism."
Eric excelled in school, working at an S level, that is ahigher level than A level that few achieved. Eric was accepted to Cambridge University, majoring in English. He further developed his comedic talent in performance and in writing while being in the Cambridge Footlights comedy club. Eric later became the President of the Footlights Club.
The actress Lyn Ashley married Eric Idle in 1969. She had a role in QUEST FOR LOVE in 1971. They had one son named Carey in 1973. They were later divorced in 1978.
In 1981, Eric Idle married Tania Kosevich; an actress who had a role in THE RUTLES: ALL YOU NEED IS CASH IN 1978. In 1990, they had a daughter named Lily.
Eric Idle is a member of the comedy group Monty Python. Idle is the only member of the club to write alone. As a result it was difficult to get the others in the club to accept his material. Eric Idle proudly calls himself the third tallest member of Monty Python. Eric Idle is admired by the other Pythons for his circle of friends. Eric Idle managed to get the production money for LIFE OF BRIAN in 1979 from former Beatle George Harrison.
