Eli Wallach was born on December 7th, 1915, in Brooklyn, New York into a Jewish Polish, immigrant family who lived in a mostly Italian neighborhood. Eli had a brother and two sisters. His siblings all became teachers. His parents, Bertha and Abraham Wallach, owned a candy store.

Eli Wallach went to college at tne University of Austin in Texas, and graduated with a B.A. in 1936. The University of Austin had no drama department, but it prepared Eli anyway for his future work as a thespian.

It was at college that Eli first performed in many plays through a student organization called The Curtain Club, and got his feet wet in the art of acting. Eli became trained as an actor at THE ACTORS STUDIO and The Neighborhood Playhouse.

Eli learned to ride horses at college, for he took care of the college's pollo ponies. This skill came in handy when he was cast in many western yarns.

During World War 2, Eli served in the Army's Medical Administrative Corps, reaching the rank of captain.

Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach were married in 1948, and stayed together as a married couple for 66 years. Anne Jackson was a wonderful actress Funny About Love, Sam's Son, and The Shining. Anne and Eli had appeared in six films together: THE TIGER MAKES OUT;(1967), HOW TO SAVE A MARIAGE AND RUIN YOUR LIFE;(1968), ZIG ZAG,;(1970), THE ANGEL LEVINE;( 1970), NASTY HABITS;(1977) and SAM'S SON; (1984).

Eli and Anne were the parents of Peter Wallach, Katherine Wallach and Roberta Wallach; all of whom followed in their parent's acting footsteps. Peter is a producer and director who co-produced Where Or When, Katherine is an actress seen in Gangs Of New York and Goodfellas, Roberta is also an actress seen in Men Without Jobs and Mistress.

Sometimes Eli Wallach was credited as Ely Wallach, during the many years of his thespian career. Eli Wallach was a talented character actor that played any role from villains, gangsters, kidnappers (THE MOON SPINNERS) and hitmen to aging doctors, Rabbis and Hollywood writers;(THE HOLIDAY). His ability to just about portray any character has kept him very busy up until 2010 when he retired from the business at the age of 94!

Like many actors, Eli Wallach got his start on the stage on Broadway, starting in 1945. In 1951, Eli won a TONY AWARD for his performance as Alvaro Mangiacavallo in the Tennessee Williams stage play, THE ROSE TATTOO.

Wallach delivered another strong performance on screen in the steamy, 1956 film version of the Tennessee Williams play, BABY DOLL, playing the potential marriage wrecker, seducer Silva Vacarro. Wallach was nominated for a GOLDEN GLOBE for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He did win a BAFTA Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

In 1961, Eli Wallach played a truck driver in The Misfits, co-starring Marilyn Monroe.

IN 1966, Eli won a Primetime Emmy for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR performance in DANGER GROWS WILD.

Eli Wallach has been heard but not seen in The Easter Egg Adventure as the narrator, and The Moon And The Son as the father.

In 1990, Eli Wallach also played Don Altobello in The Godfather: Part III
.
Wallach took an uncredited role in the Clint Eastwood hit, Mystic River;(2003), playing Mr. Loonie, the Liquor Store Owner. The film also starred Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon and Laurence Fishburne.

Over the years, Eli Wallach has played Rabbis several times. In Girlfriends, he was Rabbi Gold, in Keeping The Faith he was Rabbi Ben Lewis, and then on the TV series, Veritas: The Quest, Eli played a Rabbi on the episode called The Name of God.

In 2011, Eli Wallach won an honorary Academy Award for "a lifetime's worth of indelible screen characters."
