Harris made his New York stage debut in Sam Shepard's FOOL FOR LOVE, a performance that earned him an Obie for Outstanding Actor. This role made him realize how much he loved being a thespian.
In 1981, Ed Harris landed his first leading role in a film; cult-favorite, George Romero's KNIGHTRIDERS.
1983 was Harris' first taste of critical acclaim, playing astronaut John Glenn in THE RIGHT STUFF.
During the filming of the film, PLACES IN THE HEART;(1984), Ed Harris met the love of his life, actress Amy Madigan. Ed's character, Wayne Lomax, had an affair with Amy's character, Viola Kelsey, in the film's plot-line.
It was love at first sight. During the time frame of the filming of PLACES IN THE HEART, Ed and Amy were married on November 21st, 1983, by a Justice of the Peace in Texas. Ten years later, they had a daughter, Lily Dolores Harris. Ed became a father at age 42.

Ed Harris has performed in six films that were nominated for Best Picture Oscars: THE RIGHT STUFF, PLACES IN THE HEART, APOLLO 13, THE HOURS, and GRAVITY;(2013). One wonders how Ed Harris picks the projects he undertakes.
In an interview, Ed Harris comments on how he selects his film projects. "I don't intentionally choose movies that aren't going to be successful commercially. It just happens that the most interesting scripts I read are outside the mainstream. I like characters who have an edge to them, who are going to do something unexpected."
Thus, sometimes Ed's choices turn out to be mega-hits!
