Eddie Redmayne was born in London on January 6, 1982. His birth name is Edward John David Redmayne. His mother runs a relocation business, and his father is a businessman. His paternal great-grandfather was well-known civil and mining engineer Richard Redmayne. He counts among his siblings an older brother (HarperCollins UK CEO Charlie Redmayne), a younger brother, an older half-brother and half-sister. He attended Eton College, where he was in the same year as Prince William. He went on to study history of art at Trinity College, Cambridge, from which he graduated.
Redmayne made his professional stage debut for Shakespeare's Globe theatre in Twelfth Night at the Middle Temple Hall in 2002, and won acclaim as a newcomer for his performance in Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? in 2005.
Redmayne's television credits include the BBC mini-series Tess of the d'Urbervilles, the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, and the two-part BBC/PBS war drama Birdsong.
Redmayne has appeared in films such as The Good Shepherd, Powder Blue, Savage Grace, The Other Boleyn Girl, Hick, and Glorious 39. He starred as Osmund in Christopher Smith's supernatural gothic story Black Death. He portrayed filmmaker Colin Clark in the critically-acclaimed drama My Week with Marilyn. In 2012 Redmayne took the role of Marius Pontmercy for the film version of Les Misérables. Most recently he as starred as world-famous physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
While studying at Eton, Redmayne was a member of a group of seniors who were asked to perform as male models for a charity event at a local girls school. There he struck up a friendship with Hannah Bagshawe, who went on to earn a Masters in English Literature and French at the University of Edinburgh. After finishing rehearsals for Les Miserables, Redmayne asked her to accompany him on a short holiday to Florence, Italy. On their return to England the couple began formally dating. They were engaged in May of 2014, and married in December.
Redmayne is best known for his portrayals of Colin Clark in My Week with Marilyn, Marius Pontmercy in the musical film adaptation of Les Misérables, and Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
