About Ed Begley (1901 - 1970)
Father of equally famous
actor Ed Begley Jr., Edward Begley was born March
25, 1901 in Hartford, Connecticut. As a teenager,
Begley worked for the local radio stations performing
stints such as "Charlie Chan". Eventually Begley
would turn his focus to Broadway making his debut
somewhere around the 1940's.
In 1947, Begley made the transition to film where
he found much success starring in supporting roles;
the majority of which were as "cranky old men" due
to his age. In the 1950's Begley had made a name
for himself and was cast in more noticeable roles,
one of which was as Juror #10 starring opposite
Henry Fonda in the 1957 film "12 Angry Men".
In 1962 Begley won the Academy Award for Best Supporting
Actor for his performance in "Sweet Bird of Youth".
A few years later Begley would star in "The Unsinkable
Molly Brown" (1964). Begley also appeared regularly
on many television programs including "Bonanza"
