About Ed Asner (1929 – )
Edward Asner was born on November 15, 1929, in Kansas City, Kansas. He was raised in an Orthodox Jewish family, by first generation parents from Russia; Lizze and David Asner. DAvid Asner made a living, running a second-hand shop. Ed learned to work hard and do his best at whatever he attempted, following his dad's example.
Sometimes Ed Asner is credited as Edward Asner. Ed has four children. With ex wife, Nancy Sykes;(1959 - 1988), he is the father of twins; Matthew and Liza Asner, and a daughter, Kate Asner. Ed has another son, Charles, from a previous relationship.
Ed Asner graduated from high school, and went to the University of Chicago. During WW2, he joined the U.S. Army Signal Corp., and toured with stage plays sent to entertain the troups.
Looking at his immense list of roles he has under his belt; 329 performances in both films and TV work, his talent runs deep, being able to excel in both comedy and drama, bringing to life many kinds of characters.
Whether Ed Asner was hired for just one TV episode, or for a moive or TV series, Ed Asner always gave 100%, letting his gift for telling stories through his acting flow through his performance.
His performances; both small and big, have been well-honored by award nominations and wins. Ed Asner has been nominated twenty times for an Emmy; winning seven. He has been nominated eleven times for a GOLDEN GLOBE; winning five.
The role that made Ed Asner a household name was his portrayal of his character, Lou Grant, who was a crusty news man on the MARY TYLER MOORE show and the LOU GRANT series. Ed Asner won EMMYS for his performances in both shows, becoming the first thespian to win for the same character.
From 1981 - 1985, Ed Asner was the President of Screen Actors Guild. Ed Asner was never shy about stating his political beliefs and causes. He has used his celebrity status to support causes that deal with autism, U.S. global policies, and domestic policies as well.
ED Ashner's early TV guest appearances that made a big splash, include: THE OUTER LIMITS; (1963 Episode: IT CRAWLED OUT OF THE WOODWORK); playing Det. Thomas Siroleo, THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR;(1963 Episode: TO CATCH A BUTTERFLY), playing Jack Stander, and THE UNTOUCHABLES;(4 Episodes-1962-1963), playing Frank, Jimmy Canada, and Fedor Bartok.
Ed Asner also has a marvelous voice for voice-over work. For example, Ed brought to life the animated character, Hudson, for the 1998 GARGOYLES movie series, including: GARGOYLES: BROTHERS BETRAYED, GARGOYLES: THE FORCE OF GOLIATH and GARGOYLES: THE HUNTED. Ed was also the voice of Hudson for the TV Series GARGOYLES; (1994-1996).
Kids and some adults might also recognize Ed Asner's voice more than his face, in these animated characters, including: as J. Jonah Jameson and Officer Barr in the TV series, SPIDER-MAN;(1994-1998), as General Aranius in the educational series, THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS;(1996), as Thaddeus T. Third, and other voices for the series. RECESS;(1997-2001).
In 2003, Ed Asner voiced the character of Master Vrook Lamar in the hit movie, STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC. In 2004, Ed Asner did it again in STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II - THE SITH LORDS.
In 2004, Asner played Scowl the Owl, in HAPPILY EVER AFTER;(1990), and also voiced Judge Dreyfuss as well; although he was not credited for this second part in this project.
Ed Asner has been in several hit TV series, such as playing Chuck Marshak in MAX STEEL, Carl Dobson in the series THE CLOSER.
In his 80's, Ed Asner shows no signs of slowing down. There are new projects of his, coming out in 2015 or 2016.
