Sutherland in KELLY'S HEROS.
About Donald Sutherland (1934 – )
Donald McNichol Sutherland was born on July 17th, 1935, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He grew up in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, graduating from high school . Donald went to
University of Toronto, where he graduated with a double degree; one in engineering and one in drama.
Donald Sutherland has been married three times. His first marriage was to Lois Hardwark; (1959-1966). His second marriage was a short one, to Shirley Douglas; (1966-1970).
In 1969, Shirley went overboard with her political beliefs and was arrested for trying to give grenades to the Black Panthers. She was banished to Canada. In the late 1970s', she got back to acting, and was awarded Officer of the Order of Canada, for her contributions to Canada's cinema.
The good thing about the brief union of Donald and Shirley is that they did have fraternal twins in 1966. Kiefer Sutherland, who is now a well-known actor, and Rachel who also works in the film business behind the camera.
After living with actress Francine Racette for 20 years or so, and having three sons together, Donald and Francine married in 1990. Their children are Roeg, Rossif, and Angus. Rossif and Angus are also actors, making their way in this thespian profession.
Tall and somewhat odd looking, Sutherland spent the early part of his career playing killers and weirdos in films like THE DIRTY DOZEN and KELLY'S HEROES. His career got a boost as one of the second-tier Army misfits in THE DIRTY DOZEN; (1967).
In KELLY'S HEROES;(1970), Donald Sutherland played an off the wall character, ODDBALL, with a hippy-like, free personna, with positive outlook. He is the commander of two Sherman tanks, that join forces with Clint Eastwood and an ensemble cast to go for gold behind enemy lines. ODDBALL tells one of his negative men, who disses the plan, "IT'S A BEAUTIFUL, MOTHER BRIDGE AND ITS GOING TO BE THERE."
Also in 1970, Donald and Gene Wilder starred in a hilarious spoof of the French Revolution, STAR THE REVOLUTION WITHOUT ME, where two different pairs of twins; (one set from an aristocrat couple, and one from a poor couple), were delivered at the same time at the doctor's home. Because the doctor's staff got confused as to what pair of babies belonged to what couple, the doctor half-switched the babies; meaning that each couple had a child from each set. "At least we will be half right," says the doctor who did this. Donald had fun playing both parts of the mis-matched twins, as did Gene Wilder.
This kind of casting changed somewhat with more serious roles in M.A.S.H. and KLUTE where he played a doctor and a cop to great popular success. In 1970, Sutherland originated the role of Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman's ground-breaking MASH. Sutherland then co-starred with Jane Fonda in the popular thriller, KLUTE (1971).
Donald also proved to be a wonderful villain, in such films as EYE OF THE NEEDLE;(1981).
Donald Sutherland's breathless turn in JFK (1991), playing an ex-soldier turned-informant, was a pivotal scene in that controversial movie.
Although Donald has not always found vehicles of this quality over the years, Sutherland has always delivered complex and interesting performances, some of which won nods of recognition, via nomination or winning awards.
Sutherland received nomination honors from the GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS for his perfomance in the film, M.A.S.H.;(1970), and for his performance in the acclaimed Best Picture Of the Year, ORDINARY PEOPLE; (1980).
Donald Sutherland has done well on his TV mini-series and TV movie performances as well. He won a PRIMETIME EMMY for Supporting Actor, in CITIZEN X;(1995), and a GOLDEN GLOBE as well. In 2003, Sutherland won a GOLDEN GLOBE for Best Supporting Actor in the mini-series, PATH TO WAR;(2002).
