About Danny Aiello (1933 – )

Danny Aiello was born on June 30, 1933, in New York, New York.

Danny was always a hard worker. As a boy, he used to sell papers and shine shoes in Grand Central Station. His natural gifts in the arts began early. He sang on street corners as a boy.

Sandy Cohen and Danny Aiello were married on January 8th, 1955. They had four children:
Danny 111, Rick, Jamie and Stacy. Two of their children became involved with show business. Danny 111, had a long career as an actor/stuntman/stunt coordinator, producer and director. He died in 2010 from cancer. Rick found his calling as an actor in films and TV series.

Danny in his younger adult years, had a solid, good job as a bus driver, and was President of his Greyhound Bus Union. The idea of becoming an actor started when he was hired to be a bouncer at a comedy club, where he was asked to fill in as the EMC which he enjoyed; discovering that he liked to be on stage and entertain.

Aiello has made a great career, becoming well known by playing "Burly Italian-American characters with volcanic tempers." Having no formal training, he just used his own energy method, and was called an "instinctive actor."

Danny Aiello has an impressive list of work. His most well-known performances are listed below.

BANG THE DRUM SLOWLY;(1973) was Danny Aiello's first credited movie. He was forty years old. It starred Robert De Niro, Michael Moriarty and Vincent Gardenia.

The Francis Ford Coppola crime drama THE GODFATHER: PART II;(1974) was his second.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in DO THE RIGHT THING;(1989).

In 1975, Danny Aiello tried acting on the stage of Arlington Park Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, in the play THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON. Danny earned a nomination for a Joseph Jefferson Award; BEST ACTOR, in 1976.

In 1984, he portrayed the character, Police Chief Aiello, in ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA with Robert De Niro, James Woods and Joe Pesci.

Danny Aiello' plays a mob hit man who takes in a 12 year old girl, when her family is killed, in the film, LEON THE PROFESSIONAL;(1994).

At the age of 70, Danny Aiello finally fulfilled his dream to cut a record. His single, "All of Me", and his album, "I Just Wanted To Hear The Words" were released in 2004. Danny Aiello even went on a tour with a jazz band.

Danny Aiello and his wife are generous souls, who support a wide vairety of charitable organizations, including Covenant House, the United Way, the Salvation Army, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and the Frances Aiello Day Treatment Center in Brooklyn.
